Sikkim: Agriculture Flashpoint launched by BJP against ruling SKM

After questioning the SKM government on the law and order situation and the education sector, alliance partner State BJP launched a new front on Tuesday, claiming that the government has ignored its recommendations in the agriculture sector. Speaking to the media here, state BJP Kishan Morcha president Mohan Gurung said the Morcha had submitted 19 suggestions to Chief Minister P.S. Golay in June to boost Sikkim’s agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry sectors.

We had recommended to the SKM government that they promote the “one farmer, one crop” concept, have a specific agriculture policy, promote agro-based industry, and address problems that farmers face, particularly crop damage from wild animals, he said.

“Unfortunately, no discussion of our suggestions has taken place. Our farmers and agro-based entrepreneurs are unable to operate due to a lack of space. “It is the government’s responsibility to provide space for them,” Gurung said at a press conference at the JUS office, which was also attended by party spokesperson Raju Giri and IT convenor I.K. Rasaily.

Gurung, a former MLA, said he was making the matter public through the media because the SKM government had ignored his recommendations.

In response to a question, the State BJP leader stated that the issue was brought up now because it was inappropriate to discuss it earlier when the SKM government was dealing with the corona pandemic. There is a system in place for how an alliance works, which is currently missing…the alliance is embroiled in an internal feud, he said.

According to Gurung, there was no written agreement between the SKM and the BJP. He claimed that the alliance is only respected by one side.

The BJP’s verbal reprimand of the ruling SKM government on the agriculture sector comes after a recent reprimand on the law and order situation and the education sector. After the ruling SKM formed their own “high-level committees,” the State BJP formed its own “high-level committees” on the Limboo-Tamang Assembly seat reservation issue and the tribal status demand of the 12 left-out communities.
