Threats to Assam DGP by ULFA-I over alleged fake encounters

In a recent development, the United Liberation Front of Asom Independent (ULFA-I), a banned militant group, has issued a threat to the Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh. The group warns of dire consequences if the DGP continues to engage in alleged fake encounters. The situation has escalated following an incident where an alleged accused was injured in police firing during an extortion money case involving business persons in Upper Assam.

ULFA has highlighted numerous cases where individuals have collected money in the name of the organization. Recently, the Dibrugarh police arrested a woman named Pushpanjali Gogoi from Tinsukia for allegedly collecting funds for the “Samyukta Mukti Bahini, Assam [Swatantra]” organization. However, ULFA clarifies that the woman has no association with their group and has urged the Assam Police to halt the persecution of innocent people under the pretext of their name. This incident sheds light on the rise of extortion-related incidents in the region.

ULFA also pointed out another arrest in connection to fund collection. A man named Hem Chetia from Sivasagar district was arrested and subsequently shot in the leg by the police. ULFA contends that Hem Chetia was not appointed by the “Samyukta Mukti Bahini, Assam [Swatantra]” organization to collect funds. They believe that he may have been coerced into using their name for illegal activities. These incidents raise doubts about the accuracy of the arrests made by the police.

In their statement, ULFA specifically targeted DGP Gyanendra Prasad (GP) Singh, accusing him of orchestrating fake encounters. The militant group expressed concerns over the repeated display of bravery in such encounters and has demanded an immediate stop to these actions. They have issued a stern warning to the authorities, making it clear that this will be the last warning before taking drastic measures.

In response to ULFA’s threats, the Assam Police have heightened their security measures. The DGP has assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and are working diligently to investigate the allegations of fake encounters and extortion. The police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with them during the ongoing investigation.
