Central Govt plans to build steel stockyard in Tripura

Although there is a high demand for steel in the northeast, integrated steel plants have not been able to be built due to a lack of raw materials. The central government, on the other hand, plans to build a steel stockyard in Sabroom, Tripura, because of the enormous potential for communication, according to Union Minister of State for Steel Ram Chandra Prasad Singh.

At a press conference in Agartala on Friday evening, Singh told reporters that Tripura will be the gateway to the north-east in terms of getting clearance to use Bangladesh’s Chittagong port and establishing the Agartala-Akhaura rail link. “Plans are in the works to establish a stock yard in Sabroom to supply steel to the region,” Singh said. During his visit to the state, Singh was briefed on the state’s steel transportation challenges. Due to logistical issues, transportation costs have increased significantly.

In the coming days, however, Sabroom will be the gateway to the northeast via Chittagong port.
