Gratifying Coverns and Cave to Explore in Khasi Hills

1.Arwah Cave:

At a distance of 3.5 km from Cherrapunji Bus Stand, Arwah Cave is a huge cave located at Khliehshnong area of Cherrapunji in Meghalaya. Known for its limestone formations and the fossils, it is one of the popular caves in Meghalaya and among the spectacular tourist places in Cherrapunji.

Surrounded by the thick forest of Law Shynna in Meghalaya, Arwah Cave is an absolute treat for adventure and archaeology junkies. The cave itself is significantly larger than Mawsmai but only a small part of the cave has been opened for tourists. It is about 300 meters which takes 20 minutes to explore. Arwah Cave was discovered until recently and was least explored. It is very dark and creepy inside especially when crawling through the narrow tunnels. There are many chambers and narrow passages in the cave.

2.Mawsmai Cave:

Mawsmai Cave is at a stone’s throw away from Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and 57 km from Shillong in the little village of Mawsmai. There is a network of underground caves which is full of beautiful and sometimes scary stalactites and stalagmites. Contrary to usual tourist spots, Located south of Cherrapunji, this place is a major tourist attraction owning to the caves it has.There are three different entrances to the caves and two separate river passages within. This place is always crowded with locals as well as tourists

the cave was pretty deserted and only a few groups were out there to explore. It costs you INR 20 as the entry fee. There is a short hike through the forest to reach the main entrance of the cave. This hike takes you through some stunning views of the valley that is full of waterfalls during monsoons, and an occasional café playing local Khasi music.

3.Maumluh Cave :

Maumluh is at a stone’s throw away from Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and 57 km from Shillong in the little village of Mawsmai. 4.Krem Puri:

Unknown to the outside world until recently, Krem Puri is one of the longest cave systems in the world. Located near Mawsynram, the way to the cave from the main road is easy to miss. Look out for a small handwritten sign that says “Krem Puri”.

Once there, you’ll find guides & caving essentials such as lights for hire. The hiring charges are cheap & can be negotiated. The hike down to the cave mouth will take about 20 mins. The entrance to the cave is small & you’ll have to crouch to enter. Not for the faint hearted, the passage is narrow & can get claustrophobic. We crawled & walked for about 20 mins since we didn’t have much time to explore. Once back at the mouth of the cave, the steep ascent to the road of about 25-30 mins begins.

5.Krem Phyllut:

Located south of Cherrapunji, this place is a major tourist attraction owning to the caves it has.
