The CBI has filed a charge sheet against 160 more people, including the chairmen of three medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly rigging the 2013 Pre-Medical Test (PMT) as part of the multi-billion dollar Vyapam examination and recruitment scam. This brings the total number of defendants charged in the case to 650 so far.

“The charge sheet was filed on Thursday in the special CBI court of Nitiraj Singh Sisodia hearing Vyapam-related cases, against 160 new accused, including Pankaj Trivedi, former controller of Madhya Pradesh Vyavasayik Pariksha Mandal (Vyapam) and two officials of state Directorate of Medical Education (DME),” CBI’s special prosecutor Satish Dinkar told PTI.

Ajay Goenka, S N Vijaywargiya, and Suresh Singh Bhadoria, chairmen of Chirayu Medical College and Hospital, People’s Medical College and Hospital (both in Bhopal), and Indore-based Index Medical College and Hospital, respectively, are among those charged, according to him.

The CBI had previously stated that the accused candidates used a unique engine-bogie system or method of cheating in the exam by enlisting intelligent students (engines) as solver candidates in order to allow beneficiaries (bogies) sitting behind them to copy their answers.

According to Dinkar, 56 candidates known as ‘bogies,’ 46 people known as ‘engines,’ 13 guardians of medical course aspirants, and nine middlemen were also charged. He stated that the charge sheet was filed against the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 120 (criminal conspiracy), 419 (personation fraud), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) and other relevant counts, as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act and the MP Examination Recognition Act.

In light of the pandemic, the court has granted the CBI’s request to produce the accused in batches in court, according to Dinkar, who added that they will be produced between February 22 and March 12 in accordance with COVID-appropriate behaviour. Before charges are filed against the accused, copies of the charge sheet will be given to them, he added.

In 2013, the Vyapam (Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board) scam broke out, in which candidates bribed officials and rigged exams by having imposters write their answers. Politicians, senior officials, and businessmen were all involved in the scheme, which began in 1995. Following a Supreme Court order in 2015, the CBI took over the investigation.
