National Startup Day

According to people familiar with the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with chief ministers on Thursday to discuss the current coronavirus disease (Covid-19) situation in the country, which has seen a surge in infections due to the Omicron variant. According to the sources cited above, he will meet with the chief ministers via video conferencing at 4.30 p.m.

The meeting will take place as India approaches 250,000 daily infections in the new Covid wave, which is primarily driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant. Authorities have imposed new restrictions in response to the rapid rise in Covid-19 cases, including a night curfew and a ban on large gatherings.

Last week, the prime minister chaired a high-level meeting to assess the country’s Covid-19 situation, the healthcare system’s ongoing readiness, the vaccination campaign’s status, and the Omicron variant’s public health implications. According to the prime minister’s office, the health secretary gave a detailed presentation on the global surge in Covid cases during the meeting.

PM Modi has asked officials to work with the states to ensure that adequate health infrastructure is in place at the district level. He ordered officials to maintain intensive containment and active surveillance in clusters with higher case counts, as well as to provide the necessary technical assistance to states with higher case counts.

India has expanded its vaccination campaign for teenagers aged 15 to 18 years old and begun giving ‘precaution doses’ to healthcare workers, frontline workers, and senior citizens with comorbidities. In “mission mode,” Prime Minister Modi urged officials to speed up the vaccination campaign for adolescents. He suggested convening a meeting with state chief ministers to discuss state-specific scenarios, best practises, and public health responses.

“Given the virus’s constant evolution, the PM also spoke about the importance of continuous scientific research in testing, vaccines, and pharmacological interventions, including genome sequencing,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.

India reported 246,912 new Covid cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases to 36,317,422.
