Deep Sidhu, a Punjabi actor who was charged in the Red Fort violence case, died in a road accident near the Pipli toll plaza in Sonepat on Tuesday evening, according to police.
According to police, the tragedy occurred when the actor and his fiancée, Reena Rai, a US-based actress, were driving from Delhi to Punjab in an SUV when it collided with a truck near the Pipli toll plaza in Sonepat’s Kharkhauda.
Sidhu and Rai were rushed to a community health centre in Kharkhauda, where the actor succumbed to his injuries and Rai was referred to Civil Hospital, according to a Sonepat police spokesperson.
“Senior police officials have rushed to the spot,” the spokesman added.
Sidhu, who was arrested on February 9 of last year, was identified in a charge sheet submitted by the Delhi Police in connection with the violence at the Red Fort on January 26, 2020, which occurred after farmers staged a tractor march to protest the now-repealed three farm regulations. The march devolved into mayhem after demonstrators broke over barriers and entered the city, deviating from the planned path, clashing with security forces at various locations.
Hundreds of them descended on the Red Fort, vandalising the monument and clashing with the police. The actor allegedly made a controversial speech near the Singhu border on January 25 evening. Sidhu was also among those who attacked the Red Fort, according to the Delhi Police.
The police have included a video of Sidhu allegedly throwing away the national flag in the charge sheet. “At the same time (after the rioters climbed the ramparts), another mob member handed him (Sidhu) the national flag to hoist alongside the Nishan Sahib, but the individual (Sidhu) over the pole threw away the national flag,” the report said.
