After discussions with the BJP-led state administration in Haryana failed on Tuesday, tens of thousands of farmers marched to the district headquarters in Karnal and gheraoed it.

Farmer unions had sought action against authorities after a lathi-charge against protestors on August 28 in Karnal, threatening to lay siege to the Karnal mini-secretariat if no action was taken (district headquarters). The state government summoned a delegation of 11 agriculture representatives to discuss the issue.

The gherao began in the evening, many hours after farmers from Haryana and neighbouring states arrived at Karnal’s New Anaj Mandi on tractors and motorbikes for a mahapanchayat.
