65% teenagers jabbed with first dose within one month: Mansukh Mandaviya

First dose

According to Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya, a month after India began vaccinating its teenagers against Covid-19, as many as 65 percent of eligible beneficiaries in the 15-18 age group have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“Young India’s historic effort continues. In just one month, 65 per cent of those aged between 15-18 have been administered their first dose. Under the leadership of Prime Minister @NarendraModi, the world’s largest inoculation drive is creating new records,” Mandaviya’s tweet, translated roughly from Hindi, read.

According to data released by the Union health ministry, since January 3, when the nationwide vaccination drive for the 15-18 age group began, nearly 50 million teenagers have been inoculated with the first dose, while nearly 3.5 million have been fully vaccinated (both doses).

Covaxin, manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, is currently the only vaccine available for this age group. After receiving emergency use authorisation (EUA) from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on August 20, 2020, ZyCoV-D, developed by Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila, became the first vaccine to be cleared for those under the age of 18 (aged 12 and above).

Last year, on January 16, a nationwide drive began, with health care workers and frontline workers being the first in line. Everyone over the age of 18 was gradually invited to participate in the exercise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the vaccination for the 15-18 age group in a national address on December 25 last year.
