India, China, UAE Abstains from UNSC Resolution on Russian Invasion

India

India on Saturday abstained from voting on the UNSC resolution condemning Russian invasion of Ukraine, along with China and UAE. Soon after, India came out with an explanation on its abstention in the voting process.

Government officials said India has been speaking to all parties including Russia and Ukraine to return to the negotiating table

“By abstaining, India retained the option of reaching out to relevant sides in an effort to bridge the gap and find the middle ground with an aim to foster dialogue and diplomacy,” a source said.

Delivering India’s explanation of vote, PR T.S. Tirumurti said India was “deeply disturbed” by the developments and called for the “immediate cessation “of violence.

Mr. Tirumurti said that the global order had been built on the UN Charter and the respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states. He called on states to respect these principles and for dialogue to settle their differences.

During his speech, as with his other UNSC speeches relating to the Ukraine crisis, Mr. Tirumurti said India was “deeply concerned” about the welfare of Indians in the country.

Meanwhile, Russia used its veto powers to block a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution condemning its invasion of Ukraine and demanding an immediate withdrawal of its troops.

While eleven countries- US, UK, France, Ghana, Kenya, Gabon, Ireland, Albania, Norway, Mexico and Brazil supported the resolution.

Condemning the attack on Ukraine, US Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield told her Russian counterpart that while his country can veto the resolution, it cannot “veto” widespread condemnation of the other member states.

“You cannot veto the truth. You cannot veto our principles. You cannot veto the Ukrainian people,” Greenfield said.

China’s permanent representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, said the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states should be respected and that the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be upheld.”

“Security of one country cannot come at the cost of undermining the security of other nations…Ukraine should become a bridge between East and West,” Zhang said.

China’s decision to abstain, rather than use its veto alongside usual ally Russia, was seen as a diplomatic achievement,
