Karnataka college permits entry to Hijab-clad students; to sit in separate classrooms

According to news agency ANI, students wearing hijab (headcover) were allowed to enter the college premises of a government PU college in the Kundapura area of Udupi district, on Monday. According to the ANI report, these students will be seated in separate classrooms. “The situation in Kundapura is under control, and students are being allowed to attend colleges and campus even if they are wearing Hijab,” said ST Siddalingappa, Udupi’s additional superintendent of police, according to ANI.

He went on to say, “There is no law and order situation in Kundapur.”

Muslim students have been staging a sit-in outside the college campus since Friday after the principal refused to allow those wearing hijab, a headcover worn by some Muslim women, to enter. Other students who arrived at the college wearing saffron shawls staged counter-protests. If hijab-wearing girls are allowed in classes, the students have stated that they will wear the shawls.

Meanwhile, senior Congressman Shashi Tharoor reacted to the news on Monday by criticising the college administration on Twitter. “Karnataka breaking news or heartbreaking news? When did religious segregation in secular activities like general education become legal in our country? Is there no copy of the Constitution in this college?” Tharoor responded to the ANI update with a tweet.

The pre-university education board issued a circular on Saturday stating that students can only wear the school-approved uniform and that no other religious practises will be permitted in colleges.

Two people were arrested earlier in the day for carrying a knife near the protesting students. “Two people have been arrested, and three more are on the run. We’re attempting to locate them. One of them had a knife in his possession. They are from Gangolli and are not locals. They’ve been taken into custody by the authorities. The case is currently being investigated “According to an ANI report, Siddalingappa said.
