Chhattisgarh: CRPF personnel killed, 1 injured in encounter with Naxals

Multiple news agencies reported that a member of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed on Saturday in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh after a clash between security forces and Naxals.

The deceased personnel was an assistant commandant of the CRPF 168 battalion, according to the report. S B Tirkey has been identified as the suspect.

According to reports, the soldier was shot and later died as a result of his injuries. A combing operation is currently underway in the area, which is about 440 kilometres from Raipur, the state capital.

While officials were out patrolling for road opening and sanitising duty, an encounter broke out in the forests of Putkel, within the Basaguda Police Station limits in Bijapur. According to news agency ANI, another soldier was injured in the firing.

The Naxalite–Maoist insurgency, officially referred to as the Left Wing Extremism (LWE), is an ongoing conflict between Maoist groups known as Naxalites or Naxals (a group of communists supportive of Maoist political sentiment and ideology) and the Indian government.

The Naxalite group mainly consists of the armed cadres of the Communist Party of India (Maoist). These areas span parts of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal.
