Students’s personal information shared on social media during hijab protests

Six Muslim girl students’ parents in Karnataka have filed a police report alleging that their children’s personal information is being shared on social media. This comes amid the state’s Udupi district’s escalating Hijab row, in which the girls were among the protesters.

The parents filed a complaint with Superintendent of Police N Vishnuvardhan of the Udupi district. They are seeking strict action against the perpetrators, fearful that the information will be used to threaten the girls.

Personal information, including phone numbers, has been shared in the public domain, according to the complaints.

According to PTI, Vishnuvardhan requested documentary evidence of the information available online, and once received, appropriate action will be taken.

Karnataka’s state government issued an order on February 5 mandating a dress code in all schools and colleges, with a ban on clothing that “disturbs equality, integrity, or public law and order.” Following the notice, some girls wearing the hijab, a Muslim head covering, refused to enter the building, resulting in a standoff between students and the college administration.

They were finally allowed to enter the college on February 7, but they had to sit in separate classrooms.

Hearing the ‘hijab’ issue on February 10, a three-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court asked students not to insist on wearing any cloth on campuses of educational institutions that could incite people until the matter was resolved.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has taken up the case, saying on Friday that it will “protect the constitutional rights of every citizen” and will consider it at a “appropriate time.”
