On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation for the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. According to a press release, the university will be built at a cost of Rs 700 crore in the villages of Salawa and Kaili in Meerut’s Sardhana town.

The sports university, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), will be able to train 1,080 athletes, including 540 women and 540 men.

Modi had previously stated that instilling a sporting culture and building a world-class sporting infrastructure in all parts of the country is one of his government’s main priorities. In the poll-bound state, the establishment of the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University is expected to be a major step toward realising this vision.

The sports university, named after field hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, has been designed with all of the latest, cutting-edge sports infrastructure, including a synthetic hockey field, football field, and separate grounds for basketball, volleyball, handball, and kabaddi.

There’s also a lawn tennis court, a gymnasium, a synthetic running stadium, a swimming pool, a multipurpose hall, and a velodrome for cycling.

The university will also have facilities for shooting, squash, gymnastics, weightlifting, archery, canoeing, and kayaking, according to the government release.

Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest field hockey players of all time, won three Olympic gold medals for India – in 1928, 1932, and 1936 – during a period when India dominated the sport. ‘The Wizard,’ despite playing for India, had an international following in the West, where he was dubbed the “hockey equivalent of Muhammad Ali.”

Major Dhyan Chand was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, in 1956, and his birthday, August 29, is commemorated every year as National Sports Day.
