Railways to resume catering services after 18-month Covid hiatus

The Indian Railways are allegedly considering resuming culinary services and other passenger facilities in trains, owing to a steady decline of COVID-19 instances across the country.

According to sources, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav would host a meeting next week to decide whether or not to resume services relating to food provided in trains.

Various committees have provided their views to the Railways, taking into account the challenges experienced by passengers, according to a portal.

A choice on establishing a base kitchen, an on-board kitchen, and providing bed rolls and blankets can also be made, according to sources.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdown, e-catering services have been halted since March 2020.

On the lack of pantry services, travellers were able to order meals aboard trains straight via the RailRestro website or app in nearly all of the Indian Railways’ trains.

RailRestro, an IRCTC-authorized e-catering branch, gained clearance from the Ministry of Railways to begin services inside the trains earlier this year in January.

Thermal scanning of restaurant staff and delivery personnel several times during operating hours, daily sanitization of kitchens at regular intervals, use of protective face masks or face shields by restaurant staff and delivery personnel, and permission to prepare food only if the body temperature is below 99oF were all among the strict guidelines established by the company

The rules for their delivery workers were likewise clearly written out and strictly adhered to.
These include collecting orders only after washing hands, requiring delivery staff to utilise the ‘Aarogya Setu’ app, using contactless delivery to avoid human touch, wearing protective face masks or coverings at all times, and sanitising delivery bags after each delivery.
