Uttarakhand to have Uniform Civil Code as soon as BJP takes power

Uniform Civil Code

On Saturday, two days before the polls in Uttarakhand, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that as soon as the BJP forms the government in the poll-bound state, a committee will be formed to draught a draught of the Uniform Civil Code, which will provide the same laws for everyone in the state regarding marriage, divorce, property, inheritance, and other issues. “This Uniform Civil Code will help to realise the aspirations of those who drafted our Constitution and to solidify the spirit of the document. This will also be a significant step forward in the implementation of Article 44, which mandates UCC for all citizens “According to news agency ANI, the chief minister said.

The promise of the Uniform Civil Code comes in the midst of Karnataka’s raging hijab debate. Union minister Giriraj Singh said on Friday that UCC is urgently needed and that it should be discussed in Parliament and in society. “Some vote ke saudagar (votes dealers) are supporting such illogical demands as the wearing of the hijab in school for political gain. For the sake of votes, such people are playing with the lives of innocent girls. I believe that a Uniform Civil Code is urgently needed, and that it should be debated everywhere from the streets to Parliament “Giriraj Singh expressed his thoughts.

The Uttarakhand CM’s promise was welcomed by BJP leaders. Amit Malviya took to Twitter and wrote, “Uttarakhand CM announces BJP’s decision to implement Uniform Civil Code in Devbhoomi after elections. Uttarakhand will be the second such state after BJP ruled Goa to do so. On the one hand, Harish Rawat promised Muslim University while the BJP speaks of equality and empowerment.”

“The need for Uniform Civil Code has been long felt to protect the diversity & unique culture of Uttarakhand. Thank you Sri @pushkardhami Ji for your commitment to protect the Uttarakhandi identity,” Karnataka BJP MP Tejasvi Surya tweeted.

PM Modi will speak at an election rally in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. On February 14, the state will go to the polls in a single round. The results of the election will be announced on March 10.
