Union Education Minister: PhD not mandatory for Asst Prof recruitment this year

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre has decided not to go ahead with its plan to make a PhD the minimum qualification for hiring assistant professors this year, according to ANI.

“The ministry has put a temporary hold on PhD for assistant professor recruitment,” Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the media, “and PhD would not be mandatory for this post as of now but has not been cancelled.”

To allow universities to fill the vacancies, the Ministry of Education has temporarily lifted the mandatory PhD criteria. “Around 10,000 posts vacant in the Central universities, including teaching and non-teaching staff,” Education Ministry sources told the news agency, “and the ministry had given instruction to fill this vacancy soon.”
