Over 180 people died as a result of floods throughout Europe

On July 17, the death toll from floods in Western Europe surpassed 180, as rescue workers delved deeper into wreckage left behind by receding waters.

More than 110 people have died in the hard-hit Ahrweiler district of western Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate state, according to police, and the figure is certain to climb. 45 persons were reported killed in the adjacent state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous, including four firefighters. In addition, Belgium has verified 27 deaths.
