Assam’s government has banned private ferries following the Majuli boat accident

The state government of Assam has banned the operation of private ferries in the state, a day after a boat accident in the Majuli district. During his visit to the boat accident site, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made this major announcement.

“Private ferries will no longer operate as of today because they lack a marine engine,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Private ferry owners, on the other hand, were given the option of converting their engines to marine engines by CM Sarma.

“If owners want to convert a single engine to a marine engine, the Government of India will provide a Rs 10 lakh grant with a 75% subsidy,” CM Sarma said. “A SoP will be issued to schedule health check-ups for those who work on boats,” he added.
