Union education minister inaugurates nanotechnology, knowledge centres at IIT Guwahati

Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, visited IIT-Guwahati on Sunday and inaugurated the state-of-the-art Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) and Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS).

At the IIT-Guwahati complex, he also dedicated two hostels. At the institute, Pradhan also released a book on NEP 2020 implementation. During the inauguration ceremony, Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu and Guwahati MP Queen Oja were also present.

Pradhan congratulated IIT-Guwahati on its excellent rankings in various international and national ranking systems, and praised the institute’s efforts to create an ecosystem for research and education while also focusing on the overall development of the Northeastern region.

He also stated that IIT Guwahati must play a significant role in disaster management, biodiversity-based research, green energy development, knowledge-based economy strengthening, and student entrepreneurship.

“Rich biodiversity of the region provides a lot of scope for research, which can benefit the entire humanity. There are several policy directions in the NEP 2020, which can modernise our education system.

“As provided in the National Education Policy, we should create a hub in Guwahati by creating a cluster of institutions in the region,” Pradhan said.

He also called upon the students and faculty associated with the institute to synergize technology and knowledge to create a vibrant ecosystem of solution-centric innovation.

Indian classical music, yoga, Sanskrit, traditional medicines, temple architecture, ceramic tradition, and special agricultural practises and herbal plants of the North-East region are among the top priorities.

At the premier technology institute, Pradhan also dedicated two hostels. The new Disang hostel expands IIT Guwahati’s capacity by 1,000 rooms.
