On Monday afternoon, an abandoned bag containing an improvised explosive device (IED) was found near the gate of the National People’s Party (NPP) headquarters in Lower Lachumiere.

The bag had been confiscated by the bomb squad, and the investigation was ongoing, according to the police, who confirmed the recovery.

The device was discovered during Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Shillong to lay the foundation for renovating a road that runs along the Indo-Bangladesh border between Shillong and Dawki town.

According to NPP leaders, the abandoned bag was discovered at 2.30 p.m., after which police were notified.

The IED weighed five kg and was made of gelatine sticks, which were placed inside an empty paint container and placed in the bag.

Meanwhile, the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a banned militant group, has claimed responsibility for the planting of the bomb.

In a Facebook post, the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw claimed responsibility for planting the bomb at the ruling party’s headquarters.

The police have launched an operation and further details on the incident are awaited.
