Tripura: TIPRA restates demand for holding village committee elections

TIPRA restates demand for holding village committee elections

The Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA)  restates its call for village committee elections to be held as soon as possible in Tripura.

TIPRA is the ruling party in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Moreover, it has sent deputations to the state’s district magistrates, sub-divisional magistrates, and block development officers.

In addition, the party presented memorandums to officials, addressing the Governor of Tripura and requesting his intervention in holding village body elections.

According to the 15th Finance Commission’s recommendations, if the elections were not held immediately, the flow of funds in the villages would be hampered.

As per the annual estimates, a village committee receives around Rs 1 crore to carry out various development projects.

Meanwhile, in Tripura, there are 587 village committees that fall under the sixth schedule area.

According to TIPRA’s motha leader, “Formation of new village bodies is the need of the hour. Otherwise, the Center’s funding for carrying out development works would get stopped. The majority of the people living in village committee areas are already bereft of all basic facilities. In this scenario, any hindrance inflow of funds shall bring the development of scheduled areas into a standstill,”.

He also stated that if the party deems it necessary, it will approach the Court to request restates early elections in the village bodies.

The elected village bodies’ term ended on March 7, 2021, but polls were postponed due to an increase in COVID cases.
